How to Treat Acid Reflux Naturally

Tue, Jul 13, 21

Have you ever felt stomach acid travel up your throat? It’s the unpleasant burning feeling that most of us would have experienced. This condition is acid reflux. Almost 20% of all Australians suffer from reflux on a regular basis. Over almost two decades, we've received lots of feedback that ãlkalife naturally alkaline mineral water has helped relieve these symptoms. With the number of sufferers increasing due to our dietary style, it’s time to find out how alkaline water acts as a remedy to acid reflux.

Acid Reflux - What is it?

Acid reflux, sometimes referred to as heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition where the backflow of stomach acid enters into the esophagus, throat or mouth. It can cause complications if left untreated but it can easily be overcome with lifestyle changes and food habits even without medication.

Symptoms of Acid Reflux

A burning sensation from the lower chest going up towards the neck –“heartburn” as the doctors call it, would be the biggest symptom associated with acid reflux. A few other symptoms that you would experience when you have acid reflux include:

  • Chest pain
  • Pain in the lower chest, right after eating
  • A bitter/acidic taste in the mouth
  • Hoarseness
  • A sore throat after eating
  • Chronic cough
  • Wheezing
  • Nausea
  • Excessive secretion of saliva
  • Trouble when swallowing
Are OTC medications a lasting solution?

While over-the-counter (OTC) drugs provide temporary relief, they damage our health in the long run. Risks associated with OTC drugs for acid reflux include loss of bone density, heart disease, risk of infection, organ damage just to name a few. The drugs are proton-pump inhibitors, which prevents you from producing acid naturally. A 2006 study of 135,000 people 50 or older found that those taking high doses of proton-pump inhibitors for longer than one year were 2.6 times more likely to break a hip¹.

Alkaline Water – A good way to treat acid reflux?

While many of us think that acid is the culprit, Dr Jamie Koufman points out that a potent digestive enzyme called pepsin is the core reason. Pepsin is activated by the presence of acids and causes throat damage.

A study conducted by Dr Koufman found that natural alkaline water containing bicarbonate permanently inactivated pepsin. The study concluded that alkaline water was therapeutic to patients with reflux disease and that alkaline water aided in the absorption of vitamins and minerals.
He states, "because almost all tap and bottled waters in the United States are pH 6.7 to 7.4 and do not contain bicarbonate, one would not expect conventional waters to have any therapeutic benefits for reflux". It's useful to note that the properties of Australian tap water and bottled waters are very similar.

Does alkalife have the same effect?

alkalife contains over 200mg of bicarbonate per litre and is naturally alkaline so you would think so. Here's what our customers have had to say.

“I am nearly 38 weeks pregnant and have REAL bad reflux.
I drink some alkalife water and it goes away. My 2.5 year old now refuses any other water.”

Toni B. from Glenmore Park NSW.

“Dear Sir,

I come across Alkalife by pure accident, I am generally a fit person, but suffer from a hiatus hernia, misdiagnosed by doctors for many years. Started as a bad case reflux, because of the wrong diagnoses the condition became worst year by year.

I tried Alkalife, I thought water is water, yes we should drink it, at worst it would quench the thirst I had. Within 15 mins the discomfort eased off, I only had approx 250mls from the bottle. In the 3 weeks since coming across Alkalife I have forgot to take my medication on many occasions. Well if there is no discomfort I forget to take the medication. I advised my doctor of the reduction of the medication and he was pleased of the results. Thanks Alkalife for the relief in a bottle.

Charlie C.

“Those who suffer reflux find it helps them keep their stomach acid low.”

Natalie S. Go Vita Revesby.
